Catalog description

Prerequisites: ENGL 102 with a grade of C or higher, and a course fulfilling the History and Humanities GER 200 level course with a grade of C or higher. This course examines the historical development and contemporary application of legal frameworks governing artificial intelligence (AI). Students analyze how traditional legal concepts—including agency, liability, privacy, free speech, due process, and intellectual property—apply to AI systems, and evaluate emerging regulatory approaches through case law, statutes, and policy debates. Topics include constitutional challenges in AI-powered policing, algorithmic discrimination, product liability for autonomous systems, and international AI regulation. The course prepares students to engage critically with the intersection of history, law, and technology, equipping them with interdisciplinary skills for addressing the societal, legal and ethical challenges posed by AI innovation. This course satisfies the three credit 300 GER in History and Humanities.
