Catalog description

This course is designed to prepare students for leadership roles across the evolving power industry. Success in the power industry requires leaders at all levels to drive growth, ensure operational excellence, and adapt to an evolving energy landscape, particularly due to the integration of renewable energy. This course examines the characteristics and skills that enable leaders to make a meaningful impact across various sectors of the power industry, including electric utilities, renewable energy (such as offshore wind, solar, and hydro), grid modernization, and emerging energy technologies. Students will develop their leadership knowledge and strategic decision-making skills through class discussions, case studies, and the study of industry leaders in the U.S. power sector. The course covers essential management competencies, including developing and communicating a vision, strategic thinking, team building, and decision-making. A key objective is to equip students with the ability to assess the strengths and weaknesses of power businesses and formulate strategies to capitalize on opportunities while mitigating policy, regulatory, and environmental risks. Students will gain insights into models and frameworks used to analyze internal and external business environments, industry competition, and strategic positioning. The course aims to sharpen students’ ability to "think strategically" and diagnose challenges from a business and policy perspective, preparing them to navigate the complexities of the power industry and the evolving renewable-energy landscape.
