Prerequisites: CS 356 or IT 420 with a grade C or better. This course introduces the fundamental principles and practices of network security in modern computer networks. Students learn about common security threats, vulnerabilities, and attack techniques that target network infrastructures. The course covers key security technologies including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, DNSSEC, IPsec, and SSL/TLS protocols used to protect network communications. Students also study authentication protocols, wireless network security, and techniques for securing routers, switches, and other network devices. The course also discusses secure network design principles such as network segmentation and defense-in-depth strategies to build resilient and secure network architectures. Through hands-on laboratory exercises, practical assignments, and projects, students gain experience in configuring, implementing, and analyzing network security mechanisms.
