Catalog description
Prerequisites: CE 610 or an equivalent course or permission of the instructor. This course examines advanced and emerging construction technologies with a focus on systems integration, data-driven decision-making, and critical evaluation of technology adoption in architecture, engineering, construction, and operations (AECO). Topics include cloud-based Building Information Modeling (BIM) collaboration; Internet of Things (IoT); digital twins; extended reality (XR); reality capture; scan-to-model workflows; semantic reconstruction; and geographic information systems (GIS). The course further covers adaptive and responsive building systems, circular construction, life-cycle assessment (LCA) tools, bio-based and next-generation materials, artificial intelligence and construction data analytics, decision support systems (DSS), construction robotics, algorithmic design and generative construction, industrialized and offsite construction, digital construction logistics and supply chain automation, and smart infrastructure and asset management. Students critically examine the technological, ethical, societal, and workforce implications of automation and AI in construction, developing the ability to synthesize complex information, evaluate emerging technologies, and lead technology-driven innovation in the built environment.
