Catalog description

Prerequisites: MECH 320 or BME 321 . This course introduces finite element methods (FEM) for analysis of biological tissues and biomechanical systems. Topics include stress-strain relationships, biological material behavior, continuum mechanics foundations, discretization and element formulation, mesh generation, boundary conditions, stress analysis, and validation of computational models. Applications include bone mechanics, soft tissue modeling, implants, and human-machine interfaces. Students develop and analyze finite element models relevant to biomedical engineering practice and apply computational tools such as ANSYS to analyze real-world biomedical problems.
