Catalog description

Prerequisites: PHYS 102 or PHYS 111 . This course covers the basic principles and applications of passive environmental systems utilizing on-site resources to achieve thermal and visual comfort as well as energy and water conservation. The topics include climate analysis, thermal comfort, thermal envelope, solar shading, passive solar heating, passive cooling, visual comfort, daylighting, and renewables. This course is the first of a two-course sequence in building environmental control systems (309, 314) focusing on passive (architectural) solutions, yet active (mechanical/electrical) solutions are covered in the second sequence.
