Introduction to Spanish Literature and Thought

This course provides an overview of contemporary Spanish literature spanning the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. Through the examination of its most representative texts, the course explores how these works serve as expressions of aesthetic-literary movements and specific historical periods. The curriculum covers the Romantic period, realism and naturalism, the Generation of '98 and modernism, the Generation of '27 and avant-garde movements, the literature generated by the Civil War, and the production of the second half of the twentieth century. Upon completion of the course, students should acquire a comprehensive understanding of the key authors and texts of contemporary Spanish literature. They should also develop the ability to discern various literary styles and movements through textual analysis. Additionally, students should be able to connect literary texts to contemporary historical, philosophical, and aesthetic factors and periods.
