Introduction to Comparative Politics

What are states and how do they develop over time? What are the differences between democracies and authoritarian states and why do countries transition between these forms? How does identity affect politics within countries? Why does violence erupt in some countries? These are some of the questions addressed by this course. This course provides students with an introduction to the field of comparative politics, which focuses on understanding politics within countries. Through case studies, theoretical frameworks, and cross-national analyses, students will explore how political institutions, social structures, and conflicts shape governance and public life around the world. Students will also be introduced to common methods of data collection and analysis in political science, allowing them to understand and engage with academic research.
