Physics 701 provides a modern introduction to quantum mechanics, quantum information science, and quantum computing. The first two thirds of the course cover the foundations of quantum mechanics, including the Stern-Gerlach experiment, spin-1/2 particles, Dirac (bra-ket) notation, Hilbert space, the Schrödinger equation, operators, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, symmetries, entanglement, and Bell’s theorem. The final third covers topics in quantum information science, including quantum computational algorithms, entropy, open systems, and error-correcting codes for quantum computation and communication. Quantum Mechanics I (this course) and Quantum Mechanics II (Physics 702) together provide a solid foundation for graduate study in physics.
