Ethics Bowl: Developing and Discussing Arguments about Current Events

The Association for Practical and Professional Ethics releases approximately fourteen case studies each year for the annual regional Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl, and students in this course will learn to develop, defend, and discuss their views on these cases. Students will learn to apply various ethical theories to these nuanced problems in current events. Depending on interest and experience, some students will have the opportunity to represent UNH in the regional Ethics Bowl competition—and potentially advance to the national tournament. Students do not have to commit to being on the UNH Ethics Bowl team to take this class, and being in the class does not guarantee a spot on the team. Class meetings will often involve scrimmages on the cases to practice ethical reasoning and oral communication skills. Because the cases change annually, the course can be repeated for credit.
