Catalog description

The course will cover the structure and properties of wood as a raw material as well as conversion of logs to lumber at the UNH Thompson School sawmill. Lumber and log grading and measurement along with studies in processing efficiency, lumber drying, and physical plant operations will also be covered. There will be an introduction to paper making, veneering, chipping, and marketing of forest products. The course will also cover other non-timber forest products with an emphasis on maple syrup. Sugarbush management, sap extraction and collection, production and finishing of maple products will be covered.
