Adapted Physical Education Service Delivery Models

This graduate-level course provides an in-depth exploration of Adapted Physical Education (APE), preparing students to become leaders and advocates for inclusive physical activity opportunities for disabled individuals. Grounded in the APENS standards, the course examines critical issues shaping the field, evidence-based practices, and diverse service delivery models. Students will gain hands-on experience through consultation, mentorship, and program development with community physical activity programming. Key topics covered include motor and fitness assessment, instructional strategies, universal design, assistive/adapted equipment, behavior intervention planning, and navigating least restrictive environment (LRE) considerations. Students will develop professional competencies in IEP collaboration and advocacy, while critically analyzing and applying current research. By the end of the course, students will be able to design and implement high-quality APE programming, advocate for equitable services, and collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams to support the meaningful participation of disabled students in physical education and physical activity contexts.
