Catalog description

In-depth exploration of a particular question or topic that illustrates the intersection of History and Culture -- particularly as it produces or shapes Humanistic engagement with the past: for example "Cultural Memory of War," "Nationalism and Identity," "The Myth of the 'Lost Cause,'" African Oral Traditions," "Representations of the Holocaust in History & Film," or "The History of Memory." Students discover that cultural representations shape historical events and that history itself produces cultural, philosophic, and ideological outcomes that profoundly affect human engagement with past and present experiences. Students should consult with the Department of History for a list of topics and instructors. Course meets History major requirements for Group I, II, or III, depending on the topic.
