Catalog description

This course explores the cognitive and psychological processes involved in understanding and producing language, with applications to communication sciences and disorders. Students examine how individuals access and comprehend words, construct and interpret sentences, manage ambiguity, and use linguistic and extralinguistic context to derive meaning in real time. The course also investigates the influence of identity, dialect, and communication setting on language processing and language use. Through readings, discussion, and analysis of experimental research, students gain insight into how language processing reveals the workings of the human mind and informs both language science and clinical practice. Clinical translation is integrated throughout, consistent with ASHA Standards.
