Introduction to Civil and Environmental Engineering

Catalog description

Introduction to the civil and environmental engineering profession, including topics like structural, geotechnical, water resources, materials, transportation, site design, energy infrastructure, climate change, sustainability, natural hazards, solid and hazardous waste management, remediation, water/wastewater treatment, and air pollution. The course provides an overview of the civil and environmental project process, including the creative design process, problem solving, interdisciplinary teamwork, and presentation. Students will learn about engineering ethics, societal impacts of projects, professional licensure, and the triple bottom line along with information about campus resources, the curriculum for the programs, and career opportunities. The course also includes an introduction to relevant computer skills and software, like Excel and will require students to produce professional engineering documents which will include technical writing and calculations.
