Catalog description

This course explores biliteracy strategies (listening, oral, reading, writing, and translanguaging) that facilitate students' content area literacy development (ex. Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Art, Music, Mathematics, etc.) in bilingual education programs. Graduate students will focus on developing their students' biliteracy skills along with interdisciplinary literacy. The course focuses on interdisciplinary biliteracy strategies that promote student participation and contribute to their learning, integrating prior knowledge and cultural experiences with literacy in academic content areas. Graduate students will also discuss how translanguaging promotes students' emotional well-being and critical consciousness, supporting equitable participation by families, empowering parents, and advancing social justice education.
