'Spanish Civilization: A Historical and Cultural Survey of Spain' offers a broad survey of Spain's historical, social, and artistic development from antiquity to the present, spanning major periods, institutions, and cultural movements. Students explore how Spain was shaped by Roman, Visigothic, and Islamic legacies; the consolidation of monarchy and church; the period commonly referred to as the Golden Age; the emergence of the modern state; and contemporary debates in a global context. Alongside identity, the course examines how people lived and how society was organized, analyzing everyday life, institutions, and power relations through literature, art, film, architecture, and popular traditions. Attention is given to contested narratives and marginalized voices informed by class, gender, religion, and ethnicity, within a scope appropriate to a single semester.
