DEFINING NORMAL: MENTAL HEALTH AND IDENTITY IN POP CULTURE

This course examines how ideas about mental health and "normalcy" are socially constructed and represented in popular culture. This seminar introduces key concepts and theories related to mental health conditions while critically analyzing portrayals in film, television, social media, music, and other media. Students will explore how pop culture shapes public attitudes, policy conversations, and personal understandings of identity, and will gain awareness of professions that support individuals with mental health conditions.
