What are the impacts of tariffs on workers worldwide? How are job markets changing, and who is benefitting? Why are so many poor countries dictatorships? Is endless economic growth limited by environmental damage? Are advancements in AI going to make most of our jobs obsolete? These are some of the key questions that are central in the study of political economy. This course introduces to students key concepts in International Political Economy - the links between economics and political outcomes - in different contexts around the world. Topics covered include the changing dynamics of global trade; tariffs and taxes; the impacts of migration; changes in the labor market on a global scale; inequalities among socioeconomic groups, genders, and other identities; economic development in the Global South; environmental constraints of economic growth; and the impacts of AI and technology.
