PHYS 8310
INTRODUCTION TO MODELING FOR PHYSICAL SCIENCE
University of Nebraska at Omaha · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This graduate-level course introduces Modeling Instruction, an evidence-based, student-centered approach to teaching physical science. Participants engage in the Modeling Cycle through inquiry-based investigations, experimental design, and structured classroom discourse to develop and refine conceptual and mathematical models of physical phenomena. The course examines theoretical foundations from cognitive science and science education research, using energy as a unifying lens across physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science. Emphasis is placed on reflective teaching practice, student thinking, and assessment. This course serves as a prerequisite for advanced Modeling-based courses in the graduate certificate program.
