DATA MANAGEMENT AND KNOWLEDGE DISCOVERY IN COMPUTING AND INFORMATICS

Catalog description

This course provides students with an overview of the data management and knowledge discovery process for computing and informatics. The course begins with a brief review of key concepts in the knowledge discovery process (databases, data management, information retrieval, and more) and will progress to explore applications of data management in their areas of interest (such as but not limited to bioinformatics, health informatics, cybersecurity, human-computer interaction, design). Additionally, topics around the importance of data management will be covered, such as data governance, data decay, policy, data standards, and metadata. The course uses problem-based learning to help students develop database management skills as they apply biomedical data, as well as the basics of data management, data provenance, and analysis through KDD-based workflows. This course will also consider the fundamentals of artificial intelligence and machine learning as they pertain to data management. (Cross-listed with BMI 8876 , BIOI 4870 ).
