An examination of the American studio craft movement and the precedents and contexts that gave rise to its coalescence in the post World War II era. Individual makers and their works will be studied in relation to the broader domains of fine art and design, and in light of the discourses that held sway as the movement emerged, including feminism, environmentalism, the civil rights movement, counter-cultural forces, etc. The textile and fiber arts will be a particular focus of this exploration, examined through conceptual and critical lenses.
