Catalog description

Examination of the history of education in the United States from the colonial era to the present. Focus on shifts in formal educational policy and the influence of those policies on diverse demographic groups. Themes include the emergence of a public and private school systems, the spread of segregated schools, the development of curricular standards, the history of teachers, the push for desegregation, as well as debates over students' rights, language, affirmative action, and the public/private nature of charter schools, especially in terms of social justice.
