Writing Workshop: Extended Narratives

Catalog description

In this course, we read short stories and novels with a special attention to the style and structure of their narratives. We examine the distinction between mimetic (showing) and diegetic (telling) presentations and examine the complications of the work's overall effect and sense of meaning to develop our own narratives. The focus of this class is to develop a lively, original larger text (working toward a novel/novella) while thinking about the arc, scope, and scale of extended narrative prose. Prerequisite: 3 credits of 300-level coursework.
