Catalog description
A continuation of the second year of basic Sanskrit grammar, pronunciation, dictionary usage, and vocabulary acquisition. There is strong emphasis on noun compounds. We move onwards through the Goldman and Goldman primer. We read selectively in a range of texts, including Hindu and Buddhist scripture, and secular court poetry. Stanzas from Bhagavad-gita are introduced, as well as the Heart Sutra. Particular attention is given in class to Indic culture, its connection to Sanskrit language and religious traditions, and issues raised by the work of translation. Prerequisite: REL537e. Course offered online.
