Catalog description

A continuation of the second year of basic Sanskrit grammar, pronunciation, dictionary usage, and vocabulary acquisition. There is strong emphasis on noun compounds ( samaasas ). We move onward through the Goldman and Goldman primer, Devavanipravesika . We read selectively in a range of texts, including Hindu and Buddhist scripture, and secular court poetry. Stanzas from Bhagavad Gita are introduced, as well as the Heart Sutra . Particular attention is given in class to Indic culture, its connection to Sanskrit language and religious traditions, and issues raised by the work of translation. Prerequisite: REL287.
