Contemporary Environmental Movements

Catalog description

Beginning in 1999 with the Alternative Global Justice Movement, through global resistance to GMO foods in the early aughts, NODAPL, the Landless Peasant Movement in Brazil, and to current debates over a global Green New Deal, this course examines the current state of environmental movements. While not prerequisite, this course starts where ENV207 History of the Environmental Movement ends. Through dialogue, case studies, and careful examination of current events, students, (a) assess contemporary possibilities and limitations of movements across multiple dimensions including the political, economic, and cultural; (b) develop a complex understanding of specific movements’ contributions to the larger field, and (c) articulate new, or provide support for existing, movements.
