Themes in Women's Literature

Catalog description

English 231 examines women in contemporary American culture viewed from literary, historical, psychological, political, sociological and multicultural perspectives. The course explores the variety of writing styles women have used to think about issues such as the search for identity, power, societal roles, relationships and conflict, marriage, sexuality, treatment as the other, responses to patriarchy, achievement, and daily life. Students will be exposed to contemporary feminist criticism and encouraged to think critically about the impact of gender on literature, expression, and experience.
