Catalog description

This course is designed for students interested in learning to appreciate, understand, discuss, and critically investigate dance. This course introduces students to the art of dance through physical, creative, and analytical experiences. Students will explore basics of concert dance styles, including Jazz, Hip-Hop, Ballet, and Modern/Contemporary Dance. To better understand dance as more than just a physical activity, the historical, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds of different forms will be studied through selected readings and videos as well as class discussions. Particular attention will be paid to the topics of race, gender, class,ability, and environmental justice. This is an experience-oriented course and requires that students attend a dance performance outside of class.
