Catalog description

This course introduces students to multiple techniques within the realm of printmaking. Students learn screen-printing methods, including stencil creation applied to a screen for printing on paper or fabric. Relief printing methods include creating incisions on a surface such as wood, and applying ink to transfer the image to a surface. Carving techniques, stencil construction, and inking methods are demonstrated and utilized in coursework. The use of symbolism and personal iconography are discussed to give student tools to express themselves. The history of both relief printing and screen-printing techniques are discussed in tandem with processes. Students learn the principles and elements of design applicable to printmaking projects.
