MART 521
Game Analysis & Theory
The University of Montana · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This class explores how to formally analyze games as an artistic medium. Students will develop a methodological toolkit they can employ to conduct formal analyses of games and interactive media, informed by methods and theories from within game studies. This course also explores relevant theories from adjacent disciplines such as film and literature, but within the context of how these concepts can be applied to deepen our understanding of interactive games as an artistic medium. Students will leave this class with an informed vocabulary they can use to talk and write about games academically, knowledge of theories they can apply to improve the design of their own games, and a deeper appreciation of games as interactive art.
