Phonetics and Phonology

Offered autumn. Prereq., LING 470 . This course examines the gestural and acoustic properties of speech sounds (phonetics) and their representation and organization in particular languages (phonology). Students are introduced to the International Phonetic Alphabet and the use of spectrograms in the study of phonetics. Various theoretical concepts and frameworks to conduct phonological analyses are introduced using data from the world’s languages. The knowledge and skills obtained from this course may be applied to speech pathology, dialectology, neuroscience, language learning, and further study of linguistic theory.
