Transcultural Health

This course explores beliefs and practices related to health and illness among individuals and groups from diverse cultural backgrounds, emphasizing cultural sensitivity, diversity, and the implications for healthcare delivery. Students will critically examine how cultural beliefs shape health behaviors and influence healthcare outcomes, while also engaging with the broader social context of systemic inequality and anti-racism (SIAR). Through reflective analysis and dialogue, students will investigate the impact of institutionalized racism and social privilege, articulate their own social positions, and recognize the contributions of historically oppressed groups within the United States. The course fosters an understanding of anti-discriminatory practices and equips students with tools to challenge systems of oppression, such as racism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, and classism within healthcare and everyday life. A minimum grade of C+ is required. Nursing majors only.
