Composing for Media: Music Composition for Film and Video

Catalog description

This course will introduce students to the art and craft of composing music for use in the media arts. Concurrent with a historical overview of music's role in the visual arts will be the student's development and application of the music production skills need for professional work in this field. The course will feature lectures, technology demonstrations, composition assignments, and in-class presentation and critique. Using a laptop (required), students will work a digital audio workstation (DAW) to compose and produce original music scores, cues, and sound design elements while employing commercial software, virtual instrument libraries, and AI assisted audio processing. The ability to play a musical instrument is recommended though not required. In-class use of a personal laptop (not a tablet) with current OS and 8GB of RAM is recommended.
