Seminar on Addressing Real-World Issues with Mathematics Education

Catalog description

This course introduces students to mathematics education research that focuses on how math can be taught in ways that promote social justice, such as addressing inequities in classrooms, connecting math lessons to real-world issues, and ensuring all students have fair opportunities to learn and succeed. We will study the history of the method of teaching math through social justice and many examples from the field. Many of the examples we will consider will concern past inequities for students of color and how social justice was used to address the issues and bring about change. This is a Writing Intensive course.
