The national wound of the U.S. Civil War is like a broken bone badly set. It pains us still because it never healed the right way in the first place. The compromises Americans made, in the ways we committed the Civil War to memory, served the purpose of reconciliation and the quick resumption of business as usual, which worked to the advantage of the white majority, and the disadvantage of Black Americans. course, we will explore how images and memories the American Civil War and other civil wars, were (and are) manufactured, and how we can use historical analysis to scrutinize the ideologies baked into them.
