Race and Sports in Historical Perspective

Catalog description

This is a general education history course that focuses on race, sports, and social inequality in history. In this class, we will explore the history of sports in the U.S. and global societies with a specific concentration on anti-Black racism in American society and culture including a discussion of the intersection between race, sports, gender, and sexuality as well as Black resistance in a larger global context. Race and racism have always been a part of sports in the U.S. and sports has always been political. We will concentrate on the major documents, approaches, and comparative perspectives (including some discussion of sports in historical memory) in the history of American sports culture from the nineteenth century to the present.
