Mathematics in the Diverse Classroom Birth-Grade 2/Childhood 1-6

Catalog description

This course will consist of an examination of the curriculum goals, instructional strategies and materials for teaching mathematics in the elementary school (pre-school through middle school grades). It will focus on methods for making mathematics meaningful to children by promoting an active learning process, i.e., cooperative learning, collaborative grouping. The teacher candidate will learn to develop learning experiences and conduct assessment reflecting the processes of growth and development of the child. Attention is given to planning and teaching mathematical tasks and activities for students who are culturally diverse, those with limited English proficiency and those with special needs. Also, the students will learn how to use manipulatives to develop concepts and utilize instructional technology. The New York State's Mathematics Learning Standards and NCTM'S Curriculum and Evaluation Standards For School Mathematics will be studied in depth. Problem solving for all grades and age levels will be a major focus of the course.
