Catalog description

The macroscopic laws of thermodynamics and the microscopic foundation for those laws. Topics include the microcanonical, canonical, and grand canonical ensembles; Maxwell-Boltzmann, Fermi-Dirac, and Bose-Einstein statistics; equation of state, thermodynamic potentials, Maxwell’s relations, and phase transitions. Prerequisite: PHY 203 ; and MTH 302 or concurrent enrollment.
