Principles of Sports Coaching

Catalog description
This course introduces students to the core principles and practices of effective sports coaching. Through an integration of theory and applied learning, students will explore how personal values shape coaching philosophies and learn to lead diverse athletes with clarity, purpose, and inclusion. Emphasis is placed on developing essential coaching skills in communication, motivation, discipline, and character-building to manage athlete behavior and promote positive team culture. Students will learn about designing practice sessions using the games approach while teaching technical and tactical skills appropriate to athlete development. The course also covers foundational knowledge in physical training, nutrition, and performance enhancement, including the ethical considerations of drug use in sport. Finally, students will gain experience in team and risk management. Prerequisite: 60 hours.
