Crisis in the Late Middle Ages

This course examines environmental, biological, political, and spiritual crises in Europe between 1300 and 1500, with a primary focus on the Great Famine, the Black Death, the Hundred Years War, the Avignon Papacy, and the Great Schism. The course focuses on the role of spiritual crises, prolonged war, and death from famine and disease in reshaping social, political, and economic expectations at the end of the Middle Ages, as well as the ways in which large-scale changes were experienced by individual people living at the time. Recommended Prerequisite: HST 103 .
