Cultural Competence and Ethics in Biomedical Research

Catalog description

This is a course designed to educate pre-health and research students in biomedical research compliance and ethical standards within the field. This course will familiarize students with the terminology, resources, and current issues within the healthcare and research fields, from the perspective of a biomedical researcher. This shall be accomplished through analyzing real life applications of biomedical principles (within the Biomedical Sciences program’s curriculum) and through evaluation of historical evidences. Concepts covered include but are not limited to: pediatric ethical dilemmas, the practice of informed consent, reproductive and genomic ethics, cultural distrust in scientists and health professionals, human enhancement. This is a reading and writing intensive course in which students will use discussion and analysis to further develop their problem solving skills. Additionally, students will be expected to have foundational knowledge in cellular, molecular, and biomedical principles for discussions and assignments. Cannot be taken Pass/Not Pass. May be taught concurrently with BMS 605. Cannot receive credit for both BMS 505 and BMS 605. Prerequisite: 60 hours; and grade of C or better in BMS 231 or BIO 235 and BIO 236 ; and grade of C or better in General Education Focus on Written Communication and integrative and Applied Learning; and permission of instructor.
