Catalog description

A concentrated study of the free-living marine and estuarine invertebrates of Mississippi Sound and adjacent bayous, salt marshes, barrier islands, and the nearshore continental shelf of the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. Course emphasizes structure, classification, phylogenetic relationships, larval development, functional processes, and ecological aspects of Gulf of Mexico invertebrates and their natural assemblages. Advanced undergraduates and graduate students may be asked to conduct independent, short-term research projects during the course. Must be taken at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, Ocean Springs, Mississippi. May be taught concurrently with BIO 687. Cannot receive credit for both BIO 587 and BIO 687. Prerequisite: 16 hours in biology; and concurrent enrollment in BIO 588 . Corequisite: BIO 588
