Catalog description

A zoonotic illness is a disease that normally exists in animals but that can infect humans. The purpose of this course is to increase student knowledge relative to infectious diseases caused by zoonotic transmission/pathogens. Topic discussion modules will include background, evolution of the disease, diagnostic considerations, management, monitoring and reporting of the infectious diseases to the local health department. Students will explore important historical and contemporary zoonotic infectious diseases, their epidemiology, presentation, prevention, and treatment. This course will serve to reinforce the principles of infectious diseases pharmacotherapy and further expose students to diseases encountered in rural Missouri. Classes are didactic in nature.
