Catalog description

This course will examine the types of international criminal tribunals available for the prosecution of individuals accused of war crimes, the crime of aggression, crimes against humanity, and genocide. The course will begin with an introduction to the history of international criminal law and a comparative examination of various international criminal tribunals, including the Nuremberg trials, ad hoc criminal tribunals (ICTY and ICTR), the permanent International Criminal Court in The Hague, and hybrid criminal tribunals (Cambodia, Lebanon, and Sierra Leone). The course will then focus more specifically on the International Criminal Court (ICC), including the ICC’s formation and jurisdiction and examples of individuals and situations investigated and prosecuted thus far by the court. Prerequisites: You must be a JD or LLM student to take this class.
