Catalog description

This course examines where civil disputes may be heard and which law will govern them. Students study the structure and functions of state and federal court systems; doctrines of personal jurisdiction and venue; federal subject-matter jurisdiction (including diversity, federal-question, removal, and remand); and the interaction of these rules with choice-of-law principles. The course also addresses claim and issue preclusion and considers how evolving personal-jurisdiction standards reflect underlying policy choices and allocate discretion to judges.
