Catalog description

This course presents the fundamentals of civil litigation in United States courts. The course addresses these topics: where a case may be filed and heard (including subject-matter jurisdiction, removal, remand, personal jurisdiction, and venue), how a case is initiated and shaped (including pleading standards, service of process, amendments and relation back, joinder of claims and parties, discovery, and the Erie doctrine on choice of law), how disputes are resolved (including dismissal, summary judgment, trial, judgment as a matter of law, and appellate procedure), and the effect of judgments (including claim and issue preclusion). Throughout, the course emphasizes the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and related statutes.
