Catalog description

This course introduces students to the history of the Middle East and North Africa during the modern and contemporary periods. Themes to be discussed include the integration of the Middle East into the world economy; the nature and impact of imperialism and political reform; constitutionalism, nationalism, and sectarianism; the international state system and Middle Eastern states; the various political conflicts of the age including the Israel-Palestine conflict, the American invasion of Iraq, the so-called "Arab Spring" of 2010-2011, the Syrian civil war, the Sudan crisis; and the international and regional forces that were unleashed in response to these crises.
