Gender and Violence

Catalog description

This course draws from sociological theories to examine the ways that gender, sex, and violence intersect. Students will gain a better understanding of the rates, contexts, and causes of violence against women and examine how violence varies across community and place. This may include violence against LGBTQ communities; ways in which gender, race, age, and social class combine to explain gendered violence; perspectives on sex work and human trafficking; gendered violence on college campuses; and new research on digital media, masculinities, and violence against women. Finally, we will discuss methods of violence prevention and intervention, including sexual consent education, (in)formal institutional- and state-level policies, policing, and restorative justice.
