International Human Rights Law

Catalog description

This course will provide students with a foundation in the key sources, institutions, systems, principles, and norms of international human rights law. The course introduces students to the UN Charter and treaty systems and to the regional European, African, and Inter-American human rights systems. It examines the development and substance of particular types of rights, including civil and political rights, economic, social, and cultural rights, women's rights, and collective rights such as the rights to development and self determination. Issues and challenges in international human rights law and practice are explored, including enforcement difficulties, cultural relativism, the status of non-state actors in human rights law, and the struggle to develop new and emerging rights.
